Set by its original libretto in the Christmas season, this ballet has become a holiday classic and a seemingly indispensible artifact of celebration. With
its wildly popular musical content, this ballet is more readily accessible to most audiences than many, even when a choreographer's vision obscures the themes originally intended by its creators. In many companies, it is the annual Christmas production of The Nutcracker which acts as a cash cow for the rest of the year's operation. Bonhomie and intimacy in the opening scenes give way to the application of magic, and the work progresses to the presentation of one of the most famous full, formal divertissements in the entire repertory. Merry Christmas -- whenever you see it.--Mel Johnson
